PERFORATING

THE CITY?

A Workshop Series on Urbanisms of Social Permeability at NUS

With growing polarization and stratification in society, how can specific forms of spatial and social practices create opportunities for interactions and understanding between individuals and communities in disparate corners of the city? How do these practices overcome differences and prejudice and facilitate an urbanism of social permeability? This workshop series seeks to examine three specific types of spatial/social practices in terms of their capacity for facilitating relationships and understanding, as well as the distinct challenges they face. The practices include engaging, commoning, and gardening. Each workshop will invite a small group of scholars and practitioners to share their work and reflections and engage in critical discussion. The expected outcomes of the workshop include a book publication, a special issue for an academic journal, new discoveries, and a growing community of engaged scholars and practitioners.
